The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, FAS, has observed that countries with robust Science, Technology and Innovation based socio-economic policies and strategies generally have an advantage in global competitiveness, leading to economic growth and development.
Professor Adebowale made the observation at the opening of the 14th Annual Ibadan Sustainable Development Summit organised by the Department of Sustainability Studies (Centre for Sustainable Development), University of Ibadan.
He stated that Science, Technology, and Innovation combined with good governance have become fundamental tools for supporting the transformation of productive structures and the rational use of natural resources.
He advised that STI systems should penetrate and be implemented through different sectors, taking into cognizance the rich indigenous knowledge in different communities.
The Director, Sustainable Development Solutions Network Nigeria, Professor Labode Popoola stated that Sustainable Development as we have come to understand it is not merely a concept but a global aspiration and an ongoing process.
He said it is a pledge to safeguard our planet, elevate livelihoods, and champion the well-being of all.
This endeavour, according to Professor Popoola, a former Director of CESDEV, is a shared one where academia and policymakers, development practitioners, and thought leaders all unite for innovation, advocacy, and implementation.
The Head of Department of Sustainability Studies, Professor Saka Jimoh, said the Centre for Sustainable Development was established in 2010 as a mark of commitment of the University of Ibadan to the issues of Sustainable Development.
The theme of this year 2-day Summit is “Engaging Science, Technology and Innovation in Sustainable Development”
Keynote speakers included Professor Adenike Osofisan, the First African professor of Computer Science; Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs, a globally renowned American economist, policy analyst , Director of the Centre for Sustainable Development, Colombia University, New York; Dr Racine Ly of the Akademiya2063, Senegal; and Dr Olusola Ayoola of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Centre, Ibadan.
Participants are also expected to engage in Technical and Paper Presentation sessions.
